Project Description

After a devastating fire in January 2014, SoL Harris/Day was called on to help restore approximately 8,600 square feet at the home of the Akron Community Foundation.  The Foundation’s main lobby, which was completely destroyed down to the structure of the building, had to be completely re-built, including new mechanical, electrical, lighting, technology, ceilings, walls, doors/windows, and interior finishes.  This afforded SHD and the Foundation a “clean slate” and the opportunity to improve the function and aesthetic of the main entry, lobby, board room spaces, and staff office areas.

The existing lobby space was reworked to accommodate a new, glass-enclosed, technology-equipped, 8-person conference room. Technology and functional improvements were incorporated in the new 36-seat Board Room for Foundation and community use. The entire office was upgraded with LED lighting for increased energy efficiency.

Since the entire building suffered smoke damage, the Foundation was able to achieve cosmetic upgrades to the entire building, including new ceilings, carpeting, paint, and wallcovering throughout. This allowed for a seamless transition between the brand new area and the renovated spaces.  Designers worked closely with the Foundation to select colors and finishes that would represent ACF’s mission and provide a timeless new image.

The office area was redesigned to incorporate additional workstations (within same footprint), and a more open, collaborative feel. Contemporary furnishings for lobby, conference, and office areas were selected to work within client’s budget.
